Microsoft
Small Business Server 2003
Microsoft
has recognised the fact that small businesses require the same network
services and solutions as larger organisation but without the scalability
that larger organisations would demand and of course without the large setup
costs. Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 (SBS 2003) is the 3rd
generation release of the full-featured network solution designed to help
businesses with up to 50 PCs take advantage of the Internet, strengthen
customer relationships and improve employee productivity.
Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 delivers Windows 2003 Server, plus
Windows 2003 Server-based solutions for e-mail, fax, database, and secure,
shared Internet access - all in one integrated solution for an exceptional
value.
Small
Business Server 2003 - Components
-
Windows 2003 Server:
A best-of-breed network operating system that provides file/print,
Internet Information Server Web server, Microsoft Routing and Remote
Access Service, shared application and additional communications
services along with overall improvements in server performance and
reliability.
-
Disk Quotas
- Allows disk partitions to be setup in order to limit the amount of
disk space used on the server for a particular user.
-
Index Service
- Provides an easier way for users on the LAN to find documents
stored on the server. Users can query based on document properties,
date information, or words and phrases stored within each document.
-
Improved
Backup
- Supports integrated scheduling of backups as well as support for
additional backup media.
-
Exchange 2003
Server (with Outlook 2003 clients):
A reliable messaging and collaboration server providing a rich set of
features for users on the network, including mobile or remote users.
Features include e-mail, shared calendaring, task management, shared
contacts, instant messaging, Microsoft NetMeeting conferencing
functionality, and broad Internet standards support.
-
Outlook Web
Access (OWA) "Web Client"
- Enables users to view their own email Inbox, calendars, contacts,
and tasks as well as Exchange Public Folders through the new
Exchange Web Client. Users can connect from any location in the
world, from a PC with an Internet connection, to retrieve their
Exchange-based information without special user configuration on the
PC.
-
Instant
Messaging Service
- Lets users instantly set up a chat session with local or Internet
users without having to pay local or long distance phone fees by
leveraging the shared connection to the Internet.
-
Group
Scheduling
- Allows users to organise meetings quickly and efficiently over the
Internet so they no longer need to have a meeting to schedule a
meeting.
-
Microsoft Internet
Security and Acceleration Server:
An Internet Firewall and Web cache server that provides rock-solid
Internet security while enabling the management of individualised web
access policies, and increasing the speed of retrieval for frequently
used Internet Web pages.
-
New VPN Wizard
- Enables a business to easily configure a secure virtual private
network (VPN) to allow mobile workers to connect to the Small
Business Server network over the Internet without having to dial
directly into the server.
-
Managed
Access
- Helps prevent unauthorised employee Internet usage by allowing IT
administrators to set and manage individual web access policies as
appropriate on an employee-by-employee basis.
-
Microsoft SQL
Server 2003:
A relational database management system (RDBMS) and engine on top of
which to run and/or build line-of-business software solutions. The new
version offers an easier way to publish database information, such as
your own inventory catalogue, on the Internet, and also delivers
improved performance, reliability, and availability.
-
Shared Fax Service:
The newly re-architected, reliable Shared Fax Service allows users to
send faxes from their desktop through a multiple shared fax modem or
interface. Administrators can configure fax calling times, priorities,
and manage the fax queue.
-
Receive Faxes
Via Email
- All incoming faxes can be received via the fax server and
forwarded to a single recipients email inbox. The recipient can then
check the fax and forward it via email to the appropriate person,
hence reducing the paper trail and the accidental loss of faxes.
-
Broadcast
Fax support
- Spools documents from the client machine to the server all at one
time, and delivers the image to the list fax numbers in the fax
queue without tying up the client machine or network traffic during
the broadcast fax job.
|
-
Shared Modem
Service:
Small Business Server includes a Shared Modem Service that enables the
client machines to use modems shared on Small Business Server to connect
to external information services.
-
Save Money on
Hardware & Telephony
- Enables businesses that regularly connect to information services
to save money on hardware and telephony costs by not requiring a
modem on each client PC and not requiring a dedicated phone line for
each PC.
-
Managed
Usage
- Allows for restricted use of the shared modems as appropriate for
individual users or groups of users, providing control over who
connects to external networks.
-
Microsoft Frontpage
2003 is
the leading web authoring tool, making it easy for both novice and
experienced Web users to create great-looking Web content without
requiring programming experience.
-
Ease of Use
- Provides wizards and templates so that users can quickly build,
update and manage their Internet and intranet Websites.
-
Professional-looking designs
- Offers new
editing tools and more than 60 customisable Web site designs.
-
Familiarity
- Operates in much the same way as Microsoft Office, so users can
get up and running quickly.
